Ariam/Usaka Crises: Mayor of Ikwuano LGA intervenes
The Ariam/Usaka region of Ikwuano Local Government Area, Abia state, has long been mired in a complex and deeply rooted conflict between the indigenous Usaka people and the neighboring Nkari community from Akwa Ibom state. This conflict, driven by historical grievances, territorial disputes, and competition over resources, has tragically resulted in a cycle of violence and suffering that continues to plague the region.
Recent events, specifically on the 17th of April, 2024, have brought the simmering tensions to a boiling point, as the Nkari people launched a brazen attack on the Usaka community. This barbaric act of aggression led to the abduction of two individuals and left another critically injured, highlighting the extreme vulnerability of the local population. One of the victims, Mr. Sunday Igbokwe was ambushed as shot on his arm and neck, fortunately, he was rescued before bleeding to death.

In response to the escalating crisis, the Mayor of Ikwuano Local Government Area, Hon. Osinachi Nwaka, ably represented by the Deputy Mayor of Ikwuano Local Government Area, Hon Chief Charles Ugboajah, together with the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Ikwuano mobilized and visited Usaka Ukwu Village. This display of solidarity and decisive action underscores the gravity of the situation and the urgent need for intervention to protect the lives and livelihoods of the affected communities.
Amidst the chaos and despair, the Deputy Mayor has issued a heartfelt plea to the Abia state government, under the leadership of Governor Alex Chioma Otti, to provide immediate assistance to the beleaguered Ariam/Usaka villages. The continued onslaughts from neighboring villages in Akwa Ibom, particularly during crucial farming seasons, have left the communities in dire need of support and protection.
While speaking, Hon. Chief Ugboajah said, “It is so unfortunatee that this crisis in Ariam/Usaka villages has escalated to this point and this represents a grave humanitarian emergency that demands urgent and comprehensive action. It is imperative for all stakeholders, local leaders and the state government to come together to address the root causes of the conflict, ensure the safety and well-being of Ariam/Usaka people, and facilitate the delivery of essential humanitarian aid and services. “
He continued, “It is only through concerted efforts and genuine commitment to peacebuilding and reconciliation that will make the cycle of violence be broken, and the path towards a sustainable and prosperous future for the Ariam/Usaka communities be forged.” He concluded.
Also, as at the time of filing this report, 19th April, 2024, another attack was reported at Ariam Elu Elu from Ikorokwum and Isie Ikwen in Obot Akara Local Government Area in Akwa Ibom State. As seen in the attached picture below, a young man, Mr. Chigozie Nnochiri was attacked at his farm land.
The impact of the conflict extends far beyond the immediate casualties, with several villages, including Ariam Elu Elu, Ndi Orie, Obugwu, Azunchai, and Usaka Ukwu, bearing the brunt of the violence.
In addition to the physical destruction, the conflict has unleashed a wave of insecurity, displacement, and economic hardship, further exacerbating the suffering of the already marginalized population.
