WELCOME REMARKS BY SENATOR AUGUSTINE AKOBUNDU DURING THE RECEPTION IN HONOUR OF MATRICULATING TEACHERS IN THE FIRST BATCH OF AKOBUNDU SCHOLARS AT THE NATIONAL TEACHERS INSTITUTE, OBORO HIGH SCHOOL, IKWUANO STUDY CENTRE, ON SATURDAY, 29TH JUNE, 2024
PROTOCOL
It is with great honour and indeed a privilege to receive you today on the momentous occasion of your matriculation ceremony.
Our theme for this year's matriculation, "Teachers: Leaders, Shaping Lives," encapsulates the profound impact that educators have on our journey as a senatorial District and Abia State at large.
During my electioneering campaigns, I made a promise to our people that I would do all in my ability to support the quest for knowledge and education generally. It was in fulfilment of this aspiration that as your Senator, I decided to sponsor 113 of you as my scholars for a two-year program at the National Teachers Institute of Nigeria. From the beginning, our objective was to sponsor 20 students per Local Government, with Umuahia North producing 24, which would have given us a total of 124 students. The goal was to make sure every ward in the six (6) Local Government Areas had equal representation with two (2) candidates each. Unfortunately, some LGAs did not register enough candidates to meet this target, resulting in a deficit of 11 students. Despite this shortfall, we are pleased to be sponsoring 113 of you and remain hopeful that by the next session, we will achieve full participation.
Teaching has been the oldest profession of mankind and teachers are indeed the makers and moulders of society.
Teachers are not just transmitters of knowledge; they are architects of our future. They mould our character, ignite our curiosity, and instil in us the values that will guide us throughout our lives. A great teacher is a beacon of light, illuminating the path for students to follow and encouraging them to explore new horizons with confidence and enthusiasm.
Reflecting on my own educational and professional journey, I recall countless instances where a teacher's guidance made all the difference. Whether it was a word of encouragement during a challenging moment, a new perspective that sparked a passion, or the persistent belief in my potential, these moments have been instrumental in shaping who I am today.
Teachers demonstrate leadership in many ways. They lead by example, showing us the importance of dedication, integrity, and perseverance. They challenge us to think critically, to question the status quo, and to strive for excellence in all our endeavours in the classroom, they create a safe and nurturing environment where ideas can flourish, and every student feels valued and heard.
But the influence of teachers extends far beyond the classroom. They prepare us not just for exams, but for life. They equip us with the skills we need to navigate an ever-changing world, to be resilient in the face of adversity, and to be compassionate and responsible members of society. Their impact is lifelong, often reaching beyond what they may ever witness.
To our esteemed teachers, we express our deepest gratitude. Your unwavering commitment to our growth and development is both inspiring and humbling. You have taken on the noble responsibility of shaping lives, and through your leadership, you have empowered us to become the leaders of tomorrow.
To my fellow students, let us recognize the incredible privilege we have in learning from such dedicated educators. Let us embrace their teachings with open minds and hearts and strive to apply the lessons we learn in our everyday lives. Remember that the knowledge and values imparted to us are the tools with which we can build a brighter future.
As we embark on this new chapter, let us carry forward the spirit of learning, curiosity, and leadership that our teachers have so generously shared with us.
Let us honour their legacy by becoming lifelong learners and by using our education to make a positive difference in Abia Central and the society at large.
May I also use the opportunity to announce to you that we have also commenced registration for a scholarship program for regular students in tertiary institutions. The portal has been open, and registration is ongoing. In the same vein, and in alignment with my campaign promises, I am excited to announce the forthcoming launch of our entrepreneurial tech training program. This initiative aims to equip participants with the essential skills and knowledge required to thrive in the rapidly evolving tech industry.
Once again, I congratulate you on this auspicious occasion and urge you to celebrate this matriculation with pride and a renewed commitment to the journey ahead.
May God bless you all.
